News and Events /DIPLOMATIC CHESS TOURNAMENT HELD 16 Oct 2006


Mr. D. K. Gupta of the Botwinnik Chess Academy emerged Champion in the 2nd Diplomatic Chess Tournament, entitled "Chess Field Verses Battlefields", organized by the Russian Centre of Science & Culture, dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Botwinnik Chess Academy and 45th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's Space Flight. The three-day Tournament, begun on October 13, 2006, was successfully concluded on October 16, 2006 at 24, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi.

Mr. Vaibhav Singh Verma remained Runner-Up with 4 out of 4 points keeping the Second Position. H.E. Mr. Ashot Kocharian, Ambassador, Embassy of the Republic of Armenia, achieved the Third Position. Master Harshal Shaji of Botwinnik Chess Academy achieved the Fourth Position. Mr. Alexey M. Afanasyev, Atache, Embassy of the Russian Federation reached the Fifth Position, while Mr. Orkhan Zeynalov, Commercial Attache, Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, reached the Sixth Position.

Besides the Indian players, diplomats from six foreign missions based in New Delhi-Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Russia-took part in the Tournament. The participants played the game in the real spirit of game. Mr. C. S. Sharma, Secretary-General of Botwinnik Chess Academy, acted as the Tournament Director. Dr. Sergey V. Cherkas, Deputy Director, RCSC, distributed the Certificates of Merit to winners of the Tournament on the concluding day.
