News and Events / EVENING OF CLASSICAL MUSIC HELD

An Evening of Classical Music "Great Music and People's Tragedies", jointly organized by the Russian Centre of Science & Culture (RCSC) and Delhi Music Society, dedicated to the memory of the victims of Beslan tragedy and 100th Birth Anniversary of Famous Russian Composer Dmitriy Shostakovich, was held at the RCSC, 24, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi, on September 22, 2006.

Ms. Maria B. Pavlova, Senior Executive and Programme Coordinator, RCSC, introduced the artists to the gathering at the function. Noted Opera Singer Ms. Larisa Rai (vocal), winner of a number of international vocal competitions, and Russian Piano Teacher Ms. Svetlana Radashkevich (piano), of the Piano School, RCSC, presented the programme.

Vocal and instrumental compositions of music by renowned masters such as Georgio Caccini, Gerge Handel, Franz Shubert, Mikhail Glinka, Nikolay Rimskiy-Korsakov, Pyotr Chaikovskioy and Sergey Rahmaninov constituted the presentation.

Dmitriy Shostakovich's "Prelude and Fugue in A-minor", George Handel's "Aria of Almira", Georgio Caccini's "Amarilli", Segey Rakhmanimov's "Lilac", Pyotr Chaikovskiy's "No More Words, Oh, My Friend" and Franz Shubert's "Ave Maria", remarkably performed by the artists impressed the audience.

Dmitriy Shostakovich (25.09.1906-09.08.1975) was a Russian composer of the Soviet period. Despite having complex relationship with the Soviet Government, he remained the most popular composer of his generation and received a number of accolades and state awards, and served in the Supreme Soviet. His greatest works are generally considered to be his symphonies and string quartets, fifteen of each; other works include operas, six concertos and a substantial quantity of film music.
